Scale insects are a common pest that can look like harmless bumps on stems or leaves, but they feed on plant sap and can weaken growth over time. Almost every plant owner will encounter them eventually, and the good news is that they are very manageable with steady care. With simple removal techniques and consistent follow-up, your plants can recover and thrive again.
1. Inspect and Isolate
Look closely at stems and leaf undersides for shell-like bumps. If one plant is heavily infested, move it away from others.
2. Manual Removal
Scrape or wipe off visible scale with a soft cloth, toothbrush, or cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
3. Prune Infested Areas
Cut away leaves or stems that are heavily covered to reduce spread and stress on the plant.
4. Soap or Neem Spray
Mix mild liquid soap or neem oil with water and spray the entire plant, focusing on crevices. Repeat every 7–10 days.
5. Encourage Natural Predators
Outdoors, ladybugs and parasitic wasps are helpful allies that feed on scale.
6. Stay Consistent
Check weekly, as scale can reappear from eggs. With patience and routine care, your plant will regain strength and bounce back.
